Recently, I worked on a large mural at Mission Montessori in Scottsdale. The project was a result of a $2000 grant from the Arizona Commission of the Arts. All of the Mission Montessori Schools 151, first through sixth-grade students participated, with each class working primarily on a panel that represented the time period they are learning this year. We initially taught the students to draw and work with papier-mache and clay in the fall. We visited the school several times between October and March in prepartion for this mural.
In the end, they ended up building eight panels of wire netting, using tile adhesive on parts of some panels and plastic foam on others to create a canvas. As art instructors, we came up with the method to create the piece, then left the project up to the students. Each class had to figure out how to artistically represent what they were learning. This left the students with a feeling of accomplishment and working as a team.
There is an article on the Scottsdale East Valley Tribune website.
